STEP Exams: Overview and Process
STEP and Challenge exams are designed to help students demonstrate their knowledge and earn credit toward program requirements without completing a traditional course.
What Is a STEP Exam?
- STEP exams are course-specific assessments developed and administered by the college.
- They allow students to demonstrate mastery of course content and receive academic credit.
- These exams are often used to recognize prior work or life experience, particularly in technical areas.
Key Policies and Guidelines
- Separate Fees:
- STEP exam fees are not included in tuition.
- Fees must be paid in full at the time of scheduling.
- All fees are non-refundable.
- Grading:
- Exams are graded on a Pass/Fail basis.
- A failing result is not recorded on your official academic record.
- Credit and Enrollment Impact:
- Credits earned do not count toward your semester course load.
- If you are currently enrolled in a course and pass the STEP exam:
- You will be removed from the class roster after credit is awarded.
- The exam date serves as the withdrawal date, which determines your refund, grade, and enrollment status.
How to Take a STEP Exam
- Exams are proctored by the Assessment Center.
- After completion:
- The Assessment Center sends your score report or grade sheet to Student Records.
- Credit is then posted to your academic record (if you pass).
