Why am I being charged out-of-state tuition?
Overview
Your residency status determines your tuition rate at Gateway Community and Technical College. Tuition is based on whether you are classified as:
- A Kentucky resident
- A non-Kentucky resident
- A resident of a contiguous county in a neighboring state
Residency policies are established by the Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education and enforced by GCTC.
How Residency Is Determined
Your tuition rate is based on the information provided in your residency application. Factors considered include:
- Whether you have lived in Kentucky for the past 12 months
- Whether you receive financial support from someone outside of Kentucky
- Whether one or both of your parents live in Kentucky
- Your U.S. citizenship status
These factors help determine your domicile (permanent residence) for tuition purposes.
Additional Considerations
- Undocumented students and students with DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) status may submit an appeal.
- Students who graduated from a Kentucky high school or earned a GED in Kentucky are generally eligible for in-state tuition.
