Violence Against Women Act VAWA

Why do I have to take this?

  • All colleges and universities are now required by the federal Violence Against Women Act to proactively offer this type of training to all students on an ongoing basis. As a KCTCS student, you are not required to participate in this training though we highly encourage it. The key to taking a stand against gender violence, both on and off campus, begins by recognizing that we all have a role to play and learning various ways we can assert our role in our social circles and in our communities.

Is this required to graduate?

  • No. You will not be penalized for not participating in this program. However, we strongly encourage all KCTCS students to participate in this training as a sign of solidarity against gender-based violence. It’s likely that you know someone – a brother, sister, friend, coworker, mother, teammate – that has dealt with a physically or mentally abusive relationship. This program will help you recognize signs of an abusive relationship and what you can do to help yourself or help someone you care about.

Will this affect my GPA if I do not take this training?

  • No. You will not be penalized for not participating in this program. I am afraid this content may cause an emotional trigger due to past experiences.  May I opt out of the training program?

  • Although the content in the training program is not graphic we understand that it still may serve as a trigger for some students. You may opt out of participating in this training program as it is not required to complete your course of study.
