Why Should I Take This Training?
Under the federal Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), colleges and universities are required to proactively offer this type of training to students on an ongoing basis.
While KCTCS students are not required to participate, the training is strongly encouraged. Preventing gender-based violence begins with understanding that everyone has a role to play. The program helps students learn how to recognize harmful behaviors and take action within their social circles and communities.
Is This Training Required to Graduate?
No. Participation in this training is not required for graduation, and you will not be penalized for choosing not to participate.
However, KCTCS strongly encourages all students to complete the training as a demonstration of support against gender-based violence. The program can help you:
- Recognize signs of abusive relationships
- Understand the impact of physical and emotional abuse
- Learn how to support yourself or someone you care about
Will My GPA Be Affected If I Do Not Complete the Training?
No. Your GPA will not be affected if you choose not to participate.
Although participation is voluntary, KCTCS encourages students to complete the training to better understand gender-based violence and identify warning signs of abusive relationships. The information provided can help you support yourself, friends, family members, coworkers, teammates, and others who may be experiencing abuse.
Can I Opt Out If the Content May Be Emotionally Triggering?
Yes. Because the training is not required, you may choose not to participate.
Although the content is not graphic, KCTCS recognizes that some students may find the subject matter emotionally difficult due to past experiences.
