What is Entrance Counseling and is it required?

Body

Entrance Counseling is a mandatory information session which takes place before you receive your first federal student loan that explains your responsibilities and rights as a student borrower.

Entrance counseling is required if you’re borrowing for the first time under the Direct Loan Program and have not previously received a loan through the Federal Family Education Loan (FFEL) Program. You must complete entrance counseling before you can receive the proceeds of your first Direct Loan.

During entrance counseling, you will learn about the following:

  • What a Direct Loan is and how the loan process works
  • Managing your education expenses
  • Other financial resources to consider that may help pay for your education
  • Your rights and responsibilities as a borrower

To complete Entrance Counseling, please visit the FSA - Entrance Counseling website.

NOTE: If Entrance Counseling is not listed on your Financial Aid To-Do list as being required/needed, you are not be required to complete the Entrance Counseling. Entrance Counseling is valid for 7 years.
