STEP Exams and How to Take Them
STEP and Challenge Exams are assessments developed and administered by the college that allow students to demonstrate mastery of course content and earn credit toward program requirements.
STEP exams are designed to help students receive credit for knowledge and skills gained through work experience, training, or life experience. These exams are most commonly offered in technical subject areas.
Key Information About STEP Exams
- STEP examinations are course-specific.
- Exam fees are separate from regular tuition charges.
- All fees must be paid in full when the exam is scheduled.
- Exam fees are non-refundable.
- Credits earned through STEP exams are awarded on a Pass/Fail basis.
- A failing score will not be recorded on the student's official academic record.
- Credit earned through a special examination does not count toward the student's academic course load for the semester.
Students Currently Enrolled in a Course
If a student is currently enrolled in a course and successfully earns credit through a STEP exam:
- The student will be removed from the official class roster after credit is awarded.
- The date the exam is administered becomes the student's withdrawal date for purposes of assessment, refunds, and grading.
Receiving Credit
Once the exam has been completed and processed, the credit awarded will appear on the student's official academic record.
