The Office of Financial Aid can take into account special circumstances, which may affect your need, on a case-by-case basis. Reasons that may be considered for a Special Circumstances Review include loss of income due to layoff, disability, divorce, separation or loss of untaxed benefits etc. If you are interested in a Special Circumstance, please select your college below to begin the process.
To request your financial aid award to be re-evaluated due to special circumstances, please review and submit the appropriate documentation regarding your situation with the OCTC Professional Judgment form that is available to be picked up in the Financial Aid Office.
Each request will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis depending upon the circumstances and documentation provided. A typed letter must be submitted along with supporting documentation.
Circumstances that can be considered include, but not limited to the following:
• Income earned has significantly changed from the previous tax year for student (and/or spouse, parent if applicable)
• Change or loss in non-taxable income (ex. Child support, social security, welfare, etc.)
• Loss of unemployment compensation
• Change in income due to separation, divorce, disability, retirement, alimony, death of a spouse (and/or parent if applicable) or loss of business
• Out of pocket medical expenses that have already been paid by student (and/or spouse, parent if applicable) that exceeds 7.6% of Adjusted Gross Income.
Requests for Recalculation / Professional Judgment will not be considered on re-occurring costs such as standard living expenses (ex. Credit card expenses, utilities, etc.).
Once all required documentation has been received, please allow 7-14 days to process special circumstance cases and you will be notified regarding approval/denial of your request. If approved, a notification will instruct you on how to schedule an appointment with a Financial Aid Counselor to finalize the paperwork for your changes.
