How do I file for Academic Bankruptcy?

Academic Bankruptcy

Academic Bankruptcy allows eligible students to exclude previous coursework from their GPA calculation under specific conditions.

Eligibility Requirements

You may qualify if you:

  • Have been out of a KCTCS college for at least two (2) years
  • Have completed at least 12 credit hours of college-level coursework after readmission
  • Have earned a GPA of 2.0 or higher on those hours

How Academic Bankruptcy Works

  • Your GPA will be recalculated starting from the semester of readmission.

  • Coursework completed before your break in enrollment will:

    • Not be included in your GPA calculation
    • Still appear on your academic transcript
  • You may still retain credit for prior courses (grades of A, B, C, D, or P), but:

    • These grades will not count toward your GPA
  • Your transcript will include a notation indicating Academic Bankruptcy.

Important Limitations

  • Academic Bankruptcy can be used only once.
  • If you have already completed a credential, you:
    • Cannot apply Academic Bankruptcy to coursework used for that credential
